How to compare quotes for your next home project

Turn different estimates into a clear comparison of scope, materials, responsibilities and timing.

Two quotes for the same home project may cover very different work. The best starting point is a written scope that every provider can respond to. Include measurements, photographs, priorities and any limits on access or working hours.

Describe the finished result

Explain what you want changed and what should remain. Identify materials or finishes where you have a preference, but leave room for suppliers to explain alternatives. If you are unsure about a technical detail, ask for it to be assessed before a final quote is agreed.

Ask for an itemised estimate

Separate labour, materials, delivery, waste removal and any specialist work. Confirm what is excluded. Check whether the price is fixed for the agreed scope or an estimate that could change after inspection.

Check the working arrangements

  • Who supervises the work and answers questions?
  • What is the proposed start date and duration?
  • What access, electricity or water will the team need?
  • How will nearby furniture and finished surfaces be protected?
  • How are additional work and delays approved?

Review evidence, not just photographs

Ask about similar completed projects and, where appropriate, references you can contact with permission. Understand who is responsible for specialist assessments or approvals that the project may require.

Agree on the handover

Record the agreed scope, payment stages, changes process and completion checks in writing. Keep invoices and product information. Before final handover, walk through the work together and record any outstanding items.
